Students will identify their research idea and related topics in order to define their research question.

Concept Map which includes writing their research question.
Using brainstorming, briefly illustrate how to make a concept map and how to decide on their question, then let them start.
Either paper and pencils or look for a simple website/program where they can do it electronically.
Students will indicate the most important concepts of their research question in order to design database searches and find two relevant scholarly articles.

Complete a previously designed worksheet or make a Google form for them to complete.
Use a flipped-classroom technique to have them learn how to use 2 of the recommended databases.  Therefore, I can spend more time discussing identifying keywords/search terms, etc.
Video tutorials made by those companies.

Worksheets or Google form.
Students will assess two articles they find in order to decide whether they are pertinent to their research project.

Make this part of the above Google form.  Ask students to reflect on why or why not the articles they find will be helpful.
Another flipped-classroom video about how to read a research paper will help prepare them to scan their articles for content.
Google form.
Students will be able to identify APA citation elements in order to find resources from a reference list.

The assessment for this can be combined with the Citation Mapping below.
I will describe the elements of book and article citations, then have them participate in a kinesthetic activity.  I have all the elements of a citation cut up on cardboard which I then ask students to hold and arrange themselves in the proper order.
Citation mounted on cardboard.

Slide(s) of APA citation elements.
Students will illustrate the connections among at least 5 scholarly articles in order to begin to understand the development of a scholarly conversation.

Complete a worksheet designed for the activity.
Students will choose one of the articles they found in the activity above and map 2 citations forward and 2 citations backward.  They will also identify the type of resource from knowing the citation elements.
