Significant Learning Goals

A year (month?) after this course is over, I want and hope that students will be able to locate information appropriate to their research topics, and understand how they are joining the scholarly conversation through their own research and writing.

Note: From everything else I’ve learned about setting learning outcomes, this is a very overly ambitious list for just a one-shot, but in an effort to think about each part of Fink’s Taxonomy,  here goes:

Foundational Knowledge

·         Students will be able to take a research idea and turn it into a research question.

·         Students will be able to identify the most important concepts/keywords in the research question.

Application Goals

·         Students will be able to critically read a research article.

Integration Goals

·         Students will be able to find connections between research articles themselves and connections between the articles and their research project.

Human Dimension Goals

·         Students will understand how they can participate in the scholarly conversation through their reflective reading and writing about their own research.

Caring Goals

·         Students will gain confidence in their abilities to synthesize and use information effectively and ethically.

               

“Learning-How-to-Learn” Goals

·         Students will be able to use what they’ve learned about research in this class to conduct research for other classes.
